Azerbaijan Grand Prix Recap
What a race it had been!!
Let's have a quick recap from the race in Baku:
The start of race for the first 20 laps had only a few moves but we then move to the final laps and everything goes crazy.
We have 2 cars starting from the pits which added more tension within the race as one of those cars was Lewis Hamilton. We also had Pierre Gasly disqualified from qualifying and Lando Norris who is in a McLaren starting at 16th. So we all thought things were going to be interesting.
Amoungst everything we had Hamilton who was fighting both Franco Colapinto and Ollie Bearman. Both Colapinto and Bearman made their debute this week for their new team while also ending within the points with Hamilton. Colapinto managed to keep the 7 time world champion at bay while suffering his tyres graining with his pace to keep him behind.
Later within the race we had Oscar Piastri overtake Charles Leclerc leading the race. After many laps it seemed that Leclerc's Ferrari was struggling to keep up and overtake Piastri again with Sergio Perez behind him gaining. In lap 50 of 51 Carlos Sainz (Ferrari driver) managed to overtake Perez. However just going into turn 2 Carlos and Perez crash after fighting for second place with Leclerc causing the race to end under a safety car. After the crash many speculated as to what caused it which was sent to the stewards. It was later announced that the stewards would not be taking further action against either driver. As the steward report said "where a small touch had significant consequences" it further goes on to explain how this is a racing incident and neither driver will be blamed.
In that final lap you see the struggle of Piastri and Leclerc as they turn the corner. Once the crash occured and virtual safety car deployed the race ended. With:
P 1st - Piastri
P 2nd - Leclerc
P 3rd - Russell
P 4th - Norris
P 5th - Verstappen
After the race we hear from Max Verstappen 3 time world champion on how tough the race was. Verstappen had a tough race with traffic and an 'uncontrollable' car struggling to finish P5 behind his Norris, his rival for the championship this year.
Later we hear from Mark Webber, former F1 driver, on Piastri's performance. Webber is Piastris manager and fellow Australian racer.
"...yeah that was one of the best drives I’ve ever seen him pull off,” Webber told Sky Sports F1.
That's all for today guys. I'll post another recap next week on the Singapore GP.
See you next time,
Carissa
